If you have been to Samui, then you have more than likely come across an ad for Dr.Frogs Italian Bar & Grill in the local ‘where to’ brochures, or at the very least, been recommended to try it out by word of mouth. We took the hint and ventured over to this open-air Italian eatery, which overlooks the dreamy shoreline of Samui’s east coast.
With a beautiful bar and open floor plan, you can be sure that no matter where you are sitting that you will be able to enjoy the view. The wait staff is extremely helpful and kind and is ready at a moment’s notice to help with any recommendations, whether it be with the extensive food menu or long list of fine wines on offer. As advertised, Dr. Frogs has a large selection of homemade pastas and gnocchi that are the perfect pair for the stunning Samui sunset. However, on our visit we decided to delve deep into the menu with what some would say is the less stereotypical Italian fare.
We began with a trio of spicy, fresh oyster shooters and a beautiful Caprese salad with fresh buffalo mozzarella and homemade pesto. The pesto alone is worth ordering the Caprese for, or anything else on the menu that contains this lovely fragrant sauce. For the main course we went for the traditional lobster thermidor baked in a lovely and sumptuous tarragon cream sauce and the herb roasted lamb tenderloin served with creamy mashed potatoes and the most divine red wine sauce you may ever try. Both of these entrees are a must if you are keen on venturing off the traditional pizza/pasta menu. However, there is nothing wrong with sticking with what you know – particularly if they are homemade by a talented and dedicated kitchen staff.
To polish off the evening, we went straight for the hot chocolate fondant. This would have been a perfect pair with a delicious Italian coffee, as it was smooth with a touch of nuttiness and the perfect portion.
If it is not dinner you are after, however, then be sure to stop by for a few premium cocktails or a nice Italian grappa as you watch the sun settle into the beautiful waters that surround Samui. Though this wonderful Italian eatery tends to get rather busy – booking your table in advance is highly recommended – the atmosphere is surprisingly laid back and welcoming. So if you are on Koh Samui and not sure where to go, there is one place that the guidebooks have gotten right. Dr. Frogs is definitely worth a visit and are open every day from noon until 10:30pm.
