Taste Bar & Grill is a charming, intimate eatery located across from the Cherngtalay Park shopping center in Thalang. Serving up a delicious menu full of incredible Mediterranean and fusion appetizers and mains, as well as a large selection of refreshing cocktails, Taste has been wowing its guests for over a decade!
Owners Martin and Jade are an amazing married duo from Sweden and Nepal respectively, who previously resided in Hawaii where friends and family would often ask Martin to throw dinners for special occasions or important guests. After quitting their corporate jobs in America, the couple decided to travel the world, which is when they fell in love with Phuket and decided to open a restaurant. Most thought they were crazy, as neither had any experience, and yet here they are 10 years later with a beautiful and successful business. With Martin cooking up a storm in the kitchen, Jade mans the front, graciously greeting every guest and making sure everything runs smoothly – and that it does!
Originally planned to mainly serve small plates and appetizers, Taste’s concept changed once it was apparent that people wanted more! However, you can still get a glimpse of its origin by gazing at all of the incredible appetizers still on offer. We opted to try the Grilled Baby Octopus with Rocket and Aioli, the Gambas al Pil Pil and Grilled Corn and Salsa Flatbread. Talk about feeling like you are eating in a different country!
The baby octopus was perfectly grilled and accompanied by the light, crisp rocket and wonderfully garlicky aioli – a truly great combination of textures and flavors! The Gambas al Pil Pil were out of this world, with a generous plate of sizzling garlic butter and fresh herbs with chili. The baked shrimp was lovely and soft and a great way to start any meal! And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we tried the flatbread! Crisp, yet chewy with a slight tartness from the yogurt tahini, this was an amazing addition to the table and good enough to want to order enough to make it a main!
However, it would be a shame to skip the main course, particularly because the Fish Tacos are some of the best on the island! Served with fresh greens, avocado and lime, the grilled fish is the main attraction and is beautifully cooked, flakey and tender. The sauce placed on the tortilla itself is incredible and perfectly brings all the culinary elements together. This is an absolute must-try! Other notable dishes are the amazing Mediterranean Chicken Salad with pomegranate, olives, cucumber, mint, parsley and yogurt-tahini dressing; and the Mussels Thai-Style with an incredible Thai basil and chili sauce. Both worth having on the table for sure!
And with so many amazing food choices it is absolutely imperative to try at least one of their delicious cocktails! We recommend the Paper Plane with Bourbon, Amaro Nonino, Aperol and lime or the Samurai Prince with Vodka, Umeshu, lemon and ginger – so good! With amazing cuisine and a serene, welcoming atmosphere, Taste Bar & Grill is an absolute must-try for anyone living in or visiting Phuket!
